Lucid motors takes on Tesla head-on with their luxurious new 1111 hp performance electric car
We paid a visit to the new Lucid Motors showroom (aka "Studio") in Scottsdale Arizona to get a look at this exciting new electric car. A pre-production prototype version of the Lucid Air Dream is on display to the public, as well as the three key technological components that currently gives Lucid Motors a strong performance and efficiency advantage over other EV manufacturers.
Currently coming off the AMP-1 assembly line at their nearby Casa Grande, Arizona factory, the $169k Lucid Motors Air Dream is now becoming a realty for the 500 fortunate customers who were able to reserve one for themselves.

Guests are free to come in and look around the Lucid showroom and check out the displays, and to take a look at the car from outside. However, being this is an original prototype of a very limited edition car, guests are restricted from getting to sit inside the car (if you are a serious buyer then an exception may be made by the sales people, as seen on our visit).
The black "AIR" scripting on top of a gold background on this trim located on the car's rear side pillars, tastefully announces this model as the Dream Edition of the Lucid AIR.
The rear of the Air Dream features the "AIR" badging scripting on the lower right trunk lid. Below the subtle aerodynamic tail sculptured on the trunk is a futuristic striped Red on Black LED tail / brake lighting strip that runs fully across the back of the car.

On display in the showroom are the three main components of Lucid Motor's high-performance EV Technology: The battery cell, the Wunderbox charging system, and the electric motor drive unit.
Lucid Motor's 163 Lb. "Electric drive Unit", contains an electric Motor, gearbox, power inverter and differential all in one package. The 640 hp electric motor puts out a mind blowing 4400 ft lbs of torque. The all wheel drive Lucid Air Dream "P" edition features two of these motors, one in front and one in back, producing a combined 1111 hp. The performance model version of the Lucid Air Dream can hit 0 to 60 in a mere 2.5 seconds, and run an elapsed time in the quarter mile in only 9.9 seconds, with a top speed of 168 mph.
The Lucid "Wunderbox" is the heart of the Air Dream's onboard charging system, which is boasted as the world's fastest electric vehicle charging system made by any automaker to date. Thanks to the 19.2 kW Wunderbox, charging rates of Lucid's 900v AC power system can be as high as 20 miles per minute, getting customers back on the road quickly.
The battery pack produces 113kwh of 900v power, allowing the Air Dream to achieve an impressive range up to 520 miles on a single charge, beating Tesla's best achieved range by 100 miles.
The individual Lithium-Ion battery modules used in the Lucid Air Dream are made by a South Korean company called LG Chem. 6600 cylindrical battery cells are contained inside 22 of these battery modules which are used to create the Lucid AIR's battery pack.
The lucid Air Dream model is now being manufactured at Lucid Motors new AMP-1 Advance Manufacturing site located in Casa Grande, AZ, with initial orders now being delivered to the first group of customers. Automotive design work was done at Lucid Motor's Headquarters located in Newark CA.
The Air Dream's thin LED lightbar built into the aerodynamic nose, a modern day version of Knight Rider's KITT car, displays a visual indicator of the cars charging status, spreading all the way across when fully charged. The Intelligent Micro Lens Array headlights on the Lucid AIR are one of the most advanced lighting systems today in the automotive industry. Aerodynamics and MPG are improved by the vents located on the hood above the headlights, which also helps with cooling of the lighting components.
The pre-production version of the AIR Dream on display at the Scottsdale studio is a pearl white color which Lucid calls "Stellar White". The car also has custom graphic lettering on the front and sides indicating it's history of being a protype of the Lucid Air Dream. This particular Air Dream prototype edition features the larger 21" "AeroDream" wheels, but 19" wheels are an available option which will give customers an improvement of an additional 38 MPG.
For home charging solutions, Lucid Motors offers customers of their electric cars a wall mountable "Connected Home Charging Station". This by-directional charger draws 80 amps of A/C power.
Lucid Motors is currently offering it's EV customers six color choices: Eureka Gold, Stellar White, Infinite Black, Cosmos Silver, Quantum Grey, and Zenith Red.
In the Lucid Motors studio showroom, there is also a 4K Virtual reality experience where customers can see the Lucid Air's features from both inside and outside the car, as well as take virtual test drives.

The Lucid AIR electric cars are currently being assembled exclusively at the company's newly built, 990,000 sq. ft., "AMP-1" Advanced Manufacturing Plant, located about one hour south of Phoenix near Casa Grande, AZ. It is the first purpose-built electric car plant to ever be built in North America. The AMP-1 plant uses the automotive world's most advance robotics and production line systems. Expected initial output of the plant is 10,000 electric cars per year, with potential of future expansion of the site to be able to produce 300,000 cars per year.
